So Many Different Banana Plants . . . How Will I choose?

What will work in our arid climate?
There are well over a thousand varieties of fruiting and ornamental (non-fruit bearing) bananas. A handful of these will work well in Arizona. Check with your local nursery to find out which varieties they carry or shop online to find the plant that best suits your area. I have listed a few nursery growers which can aid in your plant buying search.

Varieties for low desert area include:Bananas sprouting

Gold Finger
Giant Cavendish
Orinoco
Apple Banana
Brazilian Banana
Lady Finger
Ice Cream

Some dwarf varieties that work well
and grow from 6 to 8 feet:

Dwarf Red
Super Dwarf Cavendish
Rajapuri
Orinoco Dwarf

It is always a good practice to check with your local nursery to find out what they recommend in any plant purchasing decision you make. What varieties will work in Arizona soil? What amenities do I need to incorporate into my existing soil? How will the scorching summer heat effect growth? There are several more “what ifs” to consider, but your nursery professionals should be able to steer you in the right direction when it comes to choosing what best fits Arizona climate. A little foresight can help you select which banana plant will insure the most measure of success.
